Engilbert

Engilbert Gíslason was born on 12 October 1877 in Vestmannaeyjar. His parents were Gísli Engilbertsson and Ragnhildur Þórarinsdóttir.

Engilbert's wife was Guðrún Sigurðardóttir. They had 7 children, but only 4 of them reached adulthood. Two of their sons became painters like their father.

Engilbert went to Reykjavík to receive education at the Learned School, but he had to quit due to bad health. Engilbert started working in a retail shop until he was around 20. During that time he was in ill health but after four years of illness he regained full health.

In the summer of 1899 Engilbert went to Copenhagen to study house painting. He felt good in Denmark and studied for three years besides spending one year afterwards working for his masters.

After Engilbert returned to Iceland he moved to Vestmannaeyjar to paint Landakirkja (the local Lutheran church). After finishing that job he spent 6 years painting in Reykjavík. In the year 1910 he moved back to Vestmannaeyjar and was there ever since.

It is said that Engilbert undermined his art of painting but many of his paintings show that he truly was a skilled artist.

His paintings and drawings of the nature, culture, daily life, work life and history of Vestmannaeyjar have received well-deserved recognition. His career spanned more than 70 years, but he died 94 years old on 7 December 1971.
