Á sama tíma kenndi hann mér einnig líffræði sem þá kallaðist náttúrufræði. Palli gerði sér fljótt ljóst að útilokað var að draga nokkuð listrænt á pappír með mínum höndum, en hins vegar gekk mér vel á bókina og  læra náttúrufræðina, enda kennslan lifandi. Kennsluaðferðir hans voru mjög óhefðbundnar og var bókinni ekki fylgt nema mjög lauslega. Heilu tímarnir fóru í sögur sem hann spann upp og þvældist ekki fyrir Palla að kríta og krydda sögurnar óspart. Um það var Palli ekki að fjölyrða, en í vorprófunum var einkunn í teikningu spyrt við einkunn í náttúrufræði til hækkunar á teikinieinkunninni. Eitt kvöldið bauð hann til skeljaleitar í kjallaranum hjá Guðmundi Tegeder á Brekastígnum. Var mér og Bjartmari Guðlaugssyni, rokksnillingi, boðið að leita skelja í ýsugörnum. Garnir voru dregnar upp úr stampi og kreistar mjúklega þannig að sandur og stundum skeljar kreistust út. Palli sagði sögur allan tímann, sem gerði þessa illalyktandi og fremur sóðalegu iðju skemmtilega. Hellisey var veiðinýlenda þeirra Steingrímsbræðra og þó Palli færi þar etv ekki fremstur í príli og sigi, fannst mér það mikil upphefð að ég 16 ára gamall var tekinn með í fýlsegg í Álsey með Palla og Guðjóni bróður mínum. Veður var óhagstætt, rigning og allt blautt og hált. Allt var farið á handvað, en þá er maður ekki bundinn í vaðinn og treystir á handstyrkinn og kom sér þá vel að við bræður vorum báðir grannir og léttir í bandi. Allt var fremur laust í fýlabyggðinni og varð að tylla lauslega niður fótum en gróður gaf eftir og var oft hangið í lausu lofti. Þar var ég á heimaslóð eftir margra ára dvöl þar í sveit og oft við skotveiði. Veiðifélagar hans voru Sverrir Einarsson tannlæknir, Ólafur Gunnarsson verkfræðingur og Stefán Jónsson alþingismaður og rithöfundur. Lítið var um leiðindi i þeim hóp! Allir miklir sögumenn og humoristar og voru sagðar margar veiðisögur og allar færðar í stílinn, en aðeins til hins betra. Tilgangur þeirrar ferðar var m.a. merkingar á súluungum, sem ég stóð fyrir. Palli var á þeim tíma orðinn þekktur kvikmyndagerðarmaður, en þessa ferð mátti hann ekki kvikmynda. Ég lánaði honum því dúnvesti sem ég var í og leið honum þá betur. Það sem ég vissi ekki á þeim tíma var að Palli kenndi krankleika fyrir hjarta sem hann sagði engum frá. Þetta sagði hann mér hins vegar  þegar hann færði mér dúkristuna sem minnst var á upphaflega. Um leið þakkaði hann mér „lífgjöfina“ því hann sagðist alveg hafa verið að gefast upp í kuldanum í bjarginu. Ég veit ekki hvort vestið varð til þess að Palli komst lífs af í land eftir að hafa klifið uppá Eldey. Þetta var hins vegar síðasta ferðin, sem ég fór með honum.
