<p></p> <p><b>Ný síða</b></p><div>Les sports jouent un grand rôle dans la vie culturelle des habitants et des sportifs se sont même fait une réputation à l’étranger. Le sport typique des Îles se nomme « sprangið » et consiste à se faire descendre par une corde dans les montagnes a coté du port. Les sportifs des Îles ont toujours été dans les rangs des meilleurs du pays. Avant, c’étaient dans l’Athlétisme et il y en avait des athlètes qui portaient des records du pays ou même d’Europe. Aujourd’hui ce sont surtout des footballeurs et des handballeurs de ÍBV (Equipe Athlétique de<br /> Vestmannaeyjar) qui portent le flambeau. ÍBV contrôle maintenant quatre équipes dans la première division de handball et de football, hommes et femmes, ce qui est unique pour une communauté de cette taille. Les jeunes sont aussi très actifs et chaque année il y a à peu près 20 catégories des jeunes qui participent aux concours nationaux. ÍBV organise aussi la fête nationale des Îles de Vestmann et des concours de football et de handball des jeunes, le plus connu étant les Jeux Shell qui sont devenus un modèle de nombreux événements sportifs. Chaque année il y a plus de 4000 personnes qui viennent aux Îles spécifiquement pour ces jeux. Les autres disciplines sont également en marche, l’association gymnastique, Rán travaille bien ainsi que le club de natation de ÍBV et l’association des jeunes sportifs Óðinn, une association d’athlétisme. L´’équipe de basket, ÍV, travaille depuis quelques années et il y a une association des sportifs handicapés, Ægir. L’équipe la plus récente est l’équipe de hockey, Jakarnir (les icebergs). KFS est une équipe de foot dans la deuxième division. Les autres sports sont le golf, joué chaque année sur le magnifique parcours de 18 trous dans un environnement unique au monde. Il y a six ans, le magazine Golf Digest, a choisi ce parcours, l’un des 200 meilleurs parcours en Europe. Le club de golf de Vestmannaeyjar organise beaucoup de coupes pendant l’été, ainsi que L’Aventure de golf, un camp de golf pour des enfants de partout du pays. L’Association de pêche à la mer organise des rencontres quelques fois par an. Il y a aussi une association d’échecs, Faxi, qui travaille depuis des années ainsi que l’équipe de sauvetage de Vestmannaeyjar. Il y a aussi un une piste d’exercise pour les amants de moto cross sur la nouvelle lave de Eldfell (Montagne de feu).</div>
