Af 12.500 starfsmönnum koma aðeins tíu til greina á hverju ári. Sú deild, sem rannsakar gróðurhúsalofttegundirnar, fékk aðeins að úthluta til tveggja og fór fram á að Óskar yrði annar þeirra. Óskar merkti fyrsta fuglinn (lunda) í maí 1953 og þá tvo síðustu (skrofur) í sept. 2014. Alls merkti hann 91.695 fugla, mest megnis einn síns liðs. Strax árið 1997 var það skráð í heimsmetabók Guinness að enginn einn maður í heiminum hefði merkt fleiri fugla og sautjánda júní sama ár hlaut Óskar fálkaorðuna, riddarakross fyrir störf í þágu fuglarannsókna. Endurheimtur eru um 10.000 þannig að mikil vinna er að baki, ekki bara að handsama fuglana, heldur að skrá merkingar og endurheimtur, en Óskar fékk afar gott orð fyrir frágang gagna. Hann merkti fugla af um 40 tegundum; mest af lunda en því næst fýl og snjótittlingi. Sem dæmi um endurheimtur þá kom í fiskinet árið 2011 fýll, sem Óskar merkti árið 1970 og var hann því minnst 41 árs.
